I don’t consider myself to be outstandingly good in much, but I do know that I excel in something called, Turbo Kick. Its popularity depends on where you live, but it does exist. Usually when I say it to people they look at like i have three heads, but if I were to say it to someone living in Orange County, California they would probably know what I was talking about. Turbo Kick is an extension of Turbo Jam, created by Chalene Johnson. Turbo Kick is a high intensity, cardio, no contact kick boxing class. The only difference between the two is that Turbo Jam is recorded in a studio and taught by Chalene Johnson, while Turbo Kick on the other hand is taught by other certified instructors, all over the country.
When it comes to sports, I’m not all that interested. I played soccer for years, but never really acquired a passion for it. However, I love being active, so I exercise a lot. I go to the gym almost every day, but on Friday nights I attend a Turbo Kick class taught by my cousin who is an instructor. I am one of those people that enjoy exercising, no matter what it is I'm doing, but Turbo gets me more pumped then anything else.
I started doing Turbo Jam when I was fourteen after my cousin introduced me to it. It was an at home work out DVD that I could do in the privacy of my home. At that age and up until a couple years ago I was very shy when it came to exercising in big groups of people. Eventually though my cousin convinced me to go to her class and I finally got over my fear. Now I’m in the front row at every class.
When it comes to most things I do, if someone tells me I’m good at it, I will disagree, or say I can do better, but not when it comes to Turbo. After years of doing it, and working on my form and technique I’m confident in the fact that I’m good at it. By no means do I mean to sound cocky, I just know that my hard work shows and has paid off. I put my best effort into all my workouts and people have told me that they can see the passion in me.
This past summer I travelled to California with my cousin Shaina to attend ‘Camp Do More 2011.’ The camp is hosted by the creator of Turbo Jam and Turbo Kick, Chalene Johnson. The camp is filled with intense workouts, as well as motivational lectures. During one of the team practices one of the Turbo Kick instructors complimented me on my form, and also told me that I should attend a training to become a certified instructor. Having a professional tell me that I am good enough to be certified only reassures my belief that Turbo Kick is an expertise of mine.
I hope to be certified in Turbo Kick relatively soon because it truly is something I love. Turbo is something I know that I will always enjoy, and I want to use my skills in it to help other people fall in love with it like I did. This work out taught me to work until you fail which is something I can apply to everything I do in life. Some people might say it’s only an exercise regimen, but it’s so much more. Turbo truly does change your life perspective.
